National League Rugby statement: Matt Salter

National League Rugby is deeply saddened to learn of the death of Clifton Director of Rugby Matt Salter.

Matt was a massively respected figure within the Bristol rugby community and dedicated much of his life to the game and to developing players across the city.

An iconic player for Bristol Rugby, Matt captained the club for four seasons while he also represented London Broncos and Leeds Tykes.

As a coach, Matt oversaw Clifton’s progression in National Two and ultimately helped the club secure promotion to National One – alongside Luke Cozens – in 2024/25.

His passion for the Lavender and Blacks, both on and off the field, consistently shone through, and his enthusiasm and dedication played an important role in helping Clifton reach the third tier last season.

We send our sincere condolences to Matt’s family, friends and everyone at Clifton RFC.
